Bibb County Wildlife Tip: Armadillo Repellents: A number of common household products are said to be useful in repelling the animals. Among these are ammonia, mothballs, castor oil, vinegar and cayenne pepper. Some of these are simply offensive to the animal, while others are actual irritants to the creature's nose. All of them have strong odors and can be used in a couple of ways. (One observer notes that if smells bad to you it will smell awful to an armadillo!) Mothballs have a strong odor of naphtha and can be dropped into the burrow in an effort to evict the occupant. However, it's been reported that sometimes the animals kick them back out.
