Downey Wildlife Tip: About Opossums: They also eat other dead animals. Behavior: Opossums do not like confrontation so the quicker they can be out of danger the better they feel. Some things they will do when in a bad situation is growl, turn and run away, throw a belch, urinate or even defecating. When they are really panicked falling down and “playing possum” is also common. The predator is fooled into believing the opossum has killed over and died. They are able to pull this off because the breathing is really shallow and slow, their bodies are stiff and they even drool. This can last a few minutes or four hours. Once danger has passed they pop back up.
