Orange Wildlife Tip: About Opossums: Normally though a litter is no bigger than 8 or 9 babies. When they are born there is no hair and they are no bigger than a dime. Once these little guys latch onto a teat they will remain there for around two months. This is where they will continue get the proper nutrients to help them continue growing and developing. They will not push each other out of the way in order to feed, so if there are more born than there are teats the extra ones will die. Once the babies are too big for the comfortable pouch they will crawl out and latch onto the mother's back. She will let them ride there while be taught the skills of finding food and surviving.
