Salinas Wildlife Tip: How to scare a possum away
Possums are scared off by the smell of a possible predator. You may collect your dog's or cat' fur after grooming them, and use it by placing it in small mesh bags. Scatter the bags around your property where you think your possum may reside. Predator urine also works, so just spread it in the ground, especially fox urine!

• Possums come where they think they can find food
Naturally, Salinas possums are attracted to yards and lawns but also houses because they know there is food inside. Remove sources of food and fruit lying around. Collect fallen apples or other fruits that may fall from your trees. Please don't leave your pet's food outside because possums aren't picky when it comes to eating!

• Try using motion activated sprinklers
The sprinklers will start spreading water whenever activity near your house is detected, and this will scare the Salinas possum away, being an efficient method. You may choose from basic or hose-free motion activated sprinklers, but make sure that you install these units all over your property.

• Use natural rodent deterrents
Strong scent is another way to keep Salinas possums away. You can use from acacia polyacantha to peppermint oil, both triggering smells that irritate rodents but also potent of masking the smell of food coming from your house, but also commercial organic deterrents.

• Trim your house trees
Possums can also sneak inside your house. They do so by climbing the branches of your trees that you have in your garden or outside your home. The branches should be trimmed to a minimum of 10ft length. Also, it would be best not to have climbing trees near your place since they can quickly climb and get into your attic.
