Miami Wildlife Tip: How to get rid of rats without killing them
Say you are a complete pacifist who would never take the life of anything. Or, say you are in a place where cultural or religious taboos exist against harming Miami rats. Yes, that really exists, the temple of rats in India is a very good example. The question is thus: how do I get these rodents out of my house without harming them? The answer comes in the form of traps. Not the dangerous traps with which you can lose a finger if you are careless either, there are humane ways of capturing these little fellas.

The bucket trap

• To start with, you will need a bucket. Preferably metal if you are going to leave it overnight.
• A plastic bottle, skewered in its length with a metal rod.
• Bait. Peanut butter is advised, Miami rodents can't stay away from it.
That's it. The method is simple: put the rod with the bottle over it across your bucket. Put some peanut butter on the bottle and have a ramp against the bucket, a simple piece of wood would be perfect for this. The trap works simply: the rat goes for the peanut butter, gets onto the bottle, it rolls and the rat drops into the bucket.

Cage traps
So, these you can buy at a local hardware store or outdoor shop. They work with bait and a catch on the door. As soon as the rodent enters and eats the bait, the door closes shut behind it. Quite simple and worthwhile. Some final words of wisdom would be to keep your place clean. Rats love a free meal, so the less attractive things are in your home, the better. Keep food in airtight metal containers, then the chances of Miami rats entering your place would be much lower.
