Orlando Wildlife Tip: Opossum odor: causes and how to remove smell
Orlando opossums are marsupials, they are native to North America and are normally the size of a house cat. Although, some of them can look quite cute, this shouldn't encourage you. When coming from the wild, they are common for being nuisances. They will prey on chickens and their eggs causing problems for farmers, they will destroy crops and they can carry many diseases making them quite dangerous. Similar to other smaller animals, they need nesting space and will often make this in our homes bringing about quite a smell.

Why do Orlando opossums smell?
They are wild animals, so will often bring about a smell that can only be recognised as from an animal that lives in the woodland. If they feel threatened, they will play dead and release a foul-like smell. If making habitat in your attic for a length of time, it's likely that they will eventually die contributing to the smell.

Is the smell dangerous?
Generally, it just isn't nice for anyone who has to live in the home. However, they are known to carry disease, so they shouldn't be approached without protective clothing.

How do I get rid of the smell?
If opossums are living in your home, it is advised that a general inspection is carried out. As well as smell, they can cause considerable damage. Most of this will need to be replaced and the opossums will need to be cleared out before any cleaning work should be undertaken.

What next?
After any damage has and Orlando opossums have been removed, its important to use a strong disinfectant to make sure any nasty bacteria have been removed. After this, many will advise using vinegar to remove any smells that may be stuck in the home.
