Sarasota County Wildlife Tip: How to Keep Rats Away: Rats have very stretchy spines, and they can curve and squeeze through holes that are as big as their heads. Be aware when buying screens. Block rats' paths of entrance into your home and sheds. Rats can squeeze through cracks 1/4 inch wide and holes the size of a dime. Cover cracks and holes in foundations with premixed patching compound on a trowel. For large cracks and holes, patch with hardware cloth and protect the metal mesh by covering it with patching compound. Nail up any loose boards and replace missing boards or siding. Repair or replace rotted wood.
