Columbus Wildlife Tip: How to get rid of birds without killing them
Ah, what a beautiful morning! We go outside to see this: your car is covered with Columbus bird droppings! What an annoyance. This means another trip to the car wash or washing the car yourself. How do we prevent this from becoming a regular thing? We don't want to kill them, just get rid of them.
Find the nest
Birds hardly go far away from their nests, with the exception of birds of prey.
• Listen for the chicks
• Look for a place the birds keep returning to regularly
Make sure nobody's home
If you found the nest by the second method, check to see if there are any Columbus chicks in the nest. If not, the next few steps would be simple:
Evict them
No lawyers necessary, no paperwork either.
• Dislodge the nest
• Destroy it
• Block off the place where the nest was and any future nest sites, wire mesh works well for this
Well that's that, right? Not really no. Birds love berries and fruit, and if you have a few fruit trees or berry bushes, we need to make sure that access to these for birds are taken away. Consider a greenhouse to keep the trees or bushes in.
What about the chicks?
If you found the nest with hatchlings in it, what do you do then? You can hardly evict the birds with chicks in the nest.Consider contacting a breeder to come collect them all. That, or contact your nearest wildlife sanctuary to do the same. After that has been done, you can continue to remove the nest and block the nesting site. Some notable precautions for dislodging the nests:
• Practice caution on ladders
• Some Columbus birds can become aggressive when their nest gets threatened
• Basic protection should be used: gloves and safety glasses are recommended
