Macon Wildlife Tip: What are the common problems that bats cause?
Although it is relatively uncommon to actually see Macon bats, they are a vital part of our ecosystem and are very intelligent creatures. However, they do get themselves in some sticky situations which can cause problems for us, humans.

Where do bats live?
Bats can often choose to make home in our building structures, such as houses, attics and barns. This can become a problem, especially in barns, if they disrupt other animals. Pest control companies will often charge an excessive amount to get rid of them.

Can they damage my house?
If you have one or two Macon bats making nest in your attic, chances are, they won't cause many issues for you, you may not even notice that they are there. On the other hand, when they start breeding, a colony forms which is when damage occurs. Your nice attic can suddenly turn into a bat den. On these occasions, you will often smell the problem before you see it. Bats will drop their faeces which can take a lot of cleaning. If a bat gets stuck and dies, again, you will soon smell the decaying bat which can ruin your hard work too.

How quickly will a colony form?
Although, the previous sounds terrible, in reality, it takes years for a colony to form. Female Macon bats will have babies only in the summer, so a large group will in fact, take many years to form.

Do bats carry disease?
Yes, like rodents, bats can spread diseases that are extremely harmful to humans (although this is less likely). The most common illness that they can spread is rabes. Human fear has exaggerated cases where this has happened, yet, it is still a risk that shouldn't be ignored.
