Chicago Wildlife Tip: How to get rid of Chicago opossums without killing them
The Chicago opossum, the only marsupial living on the continent of North America. Not a rodent as some people believe, but still carries a lot of diseases. Let's see how we can safely relocate these little guys without anybody or anything getting hurt in the process.

Problems

• To start with, they're smart. Smarter than dogs, cats and rats. They can relocate a place they found food before very easily.
• They carry diseases. Although rabies isn't one of them, they are still very dangerous.

Capture
The best way to catch them would be to use a trap similar to the ones used for raccoons, just a smaller version thereof.
• Bait can be fish, tinned cat food or marshmallows.
• Make a trail of bait leading to the trap.
• It is always advisable to wear thick gloves, preferably leather, when working with wild animals.
After catching and releasing your pouched invader, there are some steps to make sure it won't come back.

Prevention
• Feed pets indoors.
• Secure trash cans and their lids.
• Clean up dropped fruit from trees.
• Opossums love snails and slugs; scatter salt in your garden to keep these away.
• If you have a vegetable garden, fence it properly.
• An electronic repellent that sprays intruders with a burst of water is a good investment as well.
If you remove their food sources, opossums won't be coming back really quickly. If you, your family or your pets have taken a bite from a Chicago opossum, seek immediate medical attention. Opossums also carry fleas, so it is advisable to give all your pets treatment for this once the opossums are gone.
