Both Kansas City rat and mouse are rodents and have prominent set of constantly growing front teeth. There are some common fact about teeth of rats and mouse and few differences.
Common facts about Rat and Mouse Teeth
1. Both rat and Kansas City mouse have same number and types of teeth.
• 4 incisors
• 12 molars.
2. Front incisor teeth are specialized for gnawing and are open-rooted teeth mean they grow throughout life.
3. There is gap between incisor and molar teeth of rats and mouse called “diastema” which is used to remove non-edible thing from mouth before reaching molar teeth.
4. Front teeth are covered with hard orange or yellow colored enamel. Yellow color is due to presence of iron which strengthen the teeth for hard chewing and gnawing.
5. Both mouse and rats are monophyodonts refers to animal which have one set of teeth unlike other animals or humans with two types of set of teeth i.e. baby teeth and adult teeth.
6. Sometimes rats make chattering sound with their teeth fiercely which indicates the overloaded nerves.
7. Rats and mouse used to grind their teeth usually called “Bruxing” which keep the size of teeth at certain length. Otherwise they become overgrow.
8. rat teeth can grow a about 18 cm in a year.
9. As rats brux or grind their teeth, their eyes seems to jiggle or move to and fro in eye sockets. This phenomena is called boggling in rats.
