And once they start digging, you never know where or how far they will go. Sometimes the tunnels extend as far as 25 or 30 feet. Or let's say you try to seal off the burrow; no problem for the groundhog, he'll just dig a new exit hole. If you dignear a structure, you risk destabilizing it. And finally, if you happen to get too close to the animal, he may bite you. Groundhog Repellents and How they Work: While there are a variety of gadget-based devices that purportedly scare off invading groundhogs – noisemakers, ultrasonic transmitters, flashing bright lights and motion-activated sprinklers, for example – the most widely used solutions seem to be chemical – both commercial and home-concocted-- and often these yield only questionable results. The main problem is that groundhogs are simply hard to discourage. The gadget-based repellant solutions are intended to frighten the animals away as well as condition them to stay away without the need of other repellants.
