Medford Wildlife Tip: Groundhog Repellents and How they Work: A mixture of ammonia and detergent, poured into a burrow, will almost surely drive the animals out into the open. Another aroma that is offensive to groundhogs (and some humans as well) is garlic. Crushing some cloves of garlic and spreading the paste on surfaces in or near the burrow entrance can encourage the animal's departure. Alternatively, you can sprinkle garlic powder around the same area. Interestingly, talcum powder, while a pleasant aroma to humans, is repellant to groundhogs. Many common kitchen/household products are effective in discouraging the presence of the rodents. How to Keep Groundhogs Away: There are main strategies to keep groundhogs away: fence them out; scare them away or resort to chemicals. Build a fence or barrier. If the pests are raiding your garden or flower bed, or if you suspect they might be trying to dig a burrow under your deck, porch or an outbuilding, a chicken-wire fence can to an effective solution. Groundhogs are known to be jumpers, so a garden fence should be at least three or four feet high so they can't leap over it. You also know, too, that they are mighty diggers, so you need to discourage that activity too.
