Newton Wildlife Tip: Groundhog Repellents and How they Work: Mixed with water at one teaspoon per gallon, the solution is sprayed around the garden or the groundhog's immediate environs to discourage its presence. Rotten eggs and used kitty litter deployed in and around a burrow entrance are also known to send the animals exiting into the fresh air. It's important to state, though, that groundhogs are stubborn and resilient beasts and that they don't give up easily. They can be discouraged, but defeated? Sometimes yes, sometimes only maybe. Whichever solution is chosen, whether commercial or home-grown, one thing appears certain: Groundhogs persevere. How to Trap a Groundhog: Set in place and concealed at the entrance to a groundhog's burrow, the trap springs shut when the animal steps outside. It usually kills the animal instantly. The other commonly used device is a foot or leg trap, in principle much like a common mousetrap, which can be placed at the burrow entrance, on a known trail, or anywhere else the groundhog might travel. These traps feature steel jaws that openand are locked in place by a small pedal that trips when stepped on, triggering the jaws to snap shut.
