Lansing Wildlife Tip: What Smells Repel Squirrels?
Don't be fooled by their adorable look and frail structure, because these pesky creatures will nibble on your garden vegetation's, when you look away. Squirrels are also nuisances to garden bird-homes, crawling up the structure and consuming the bird's feed. Different extermination methods have been invented to repel Lansing squirrels but not all are effective. Luckily, squirrels can be effectively repelled with certain smells. So, what smells repel squirrels?

Marigolds and Crown imperials
Some Organic plants produce pudgent Odors that are so offensive to squirrels and other animals it repels them away. Some of this plants are Marigolds and Crown imperials. These plants are naturally infused with pungent chemical properties, used as a defense mechanism by the plant against other organisms e.g. omnivores and herbivores. Marigolds and Crown imperials are not ideal plants to grow around plants with nice fragrances, e.g. Lavenders. But they sure do keep Lansing squirrels away.

Mothballs
Remember the smell of Mothballs? Yeah, that smell is also a great repellent against squirrels. Thanks to the active ingredient used in mothballs; naphthalene or Para dichlorobenzene, the chemical creates a foul smell which squirrels despise, thereby repelling them. You can place the mothballs indoors or outdoors, basically in areas with recent Squirrel activity. For a more effectiveness, place the mothballs within or by the squirrel's tree base.

Animal Urine
The smell of natural predators are very effective against Lansing squirrels. Natural predators to squirrels are Cats, Wolves, Owls and even Dogs. Most industrialized squirrel repellents are composed of scents, formulated from their natural predators.

Ammonia
Ammonia is a chemical substance that produces a pungent odor. The use of Ammonia can cause damage to plants and so it should not be applied in areas with vegetation's. The smell produced from Ammonia irritates squirrels and most people, making it a great repellent.
