Canton Wildlife Tip: At Texas University, Dr. Paul Mazur removed the pineal gland from one of young twin urban wild animal pest animals. The pineal gland is about the size of a pea and produces a hormone called melatonin. Both pest animals grew teeth as yearlings, but only the normal one shed them in January. In early summer when the normal pest animal began growing new teeth, his brother still had his winter coat and teeth, his endocrine system being unable to respond to changes in day length. When the teeth drop off, only two reddish stubs even with the head hair remain. But once these stubs begin to grow into teeth, the change is dramatic.
