Paterson Wildlife Tip: Where do rats go in summer?
Out, collecting food mostly. Their natural inclinations are to keep foraging, and this instinct kicks into overdrive during the warmer months.

Woodlands and forests
Here they find berries, nuts, fruit and grains, as well as other Paterson rodents, amphibians, birds and lizards. All these are collected and promptly brought back to the nest. Sometimes they come across the carcass of some or other dead creature, which is also stripped clean and brought to the nest.

City dumps
Here we will always find rats scurrying about, picking over the waste we throw out. They also tend to be bigger and meaner here, having the need to defend themselves against crows, gulls, buzzards and other scavengers with the same ideas in mind.

Underground
They share the sewers with other creatures, like stray dogs, turtles, cats and more. Although they can be found here throughout the year, they get very active during the warmer months, scavenging anything and everything they can find. Sewer and tunnel rats are the biggest and meanest Paterson rats you can find, and they have no qualms about biting a careless foot of some worker. Due to the waste they crawl through, they always carry diseases that are very harmful or fatal to humans and other animals.Further down in the mines, rats are also a big problem. They chew through workers' work bags and lunch tins to get at the food inside, they chew through wires and cause power outages. These are also larger than their tunnel and sewer counterparts, due to the higher radiation levels at those levels. They usually live off anything they can find, and are thus quite aggressive towards everything, even their own kind. Competition for food is fierce here, and these Paterson rats are voracious scavengers.
