Las Vegas Wildlife Tip: What is a skunk's natural diet?
Our universe is very vast and diverse. Many species of animals and plants live and survive on this planet. To maintain a balance among living organisms concept of food chains and food webs exist. Some species feed entirely on plants while some on animals, but skunks are those mammals that have one of the most flexible digestive system.

Skunks are omnivores:
Las Vegas skunks are small mammals that feed both upon animals and plants depending upon the type of food source available. They can even search for their food in garbage cans and eat the scrape or they can hunt for food if they want.

Skunks feeding on plants:
About 80% of a skunk diet constitute vegetables and fruits. Skunks are opportunists they take whatever they get. But mostly they search for raw, carrots, nuts, green beans, yams potatoes and butter nuts. Skunks also feed upon fruits such as berries mainly strawberries, cranberries, or other citrus fruits like melons, bananas and apples. But as they are opportunists they can survive on grass, leafy vegetables and even roots and stems of plants. So, if a Las Vegas skunk enters your yard or field get rid of it before it demolish your field completely.

Skunks feeding on animals:
Skunks living in urban areas and forests mainly feed upon animals. Wild skunks can hunt even snakes, rats, moles, lizards and salamanders. But domesticated or docile skunks mainly avoid hunting large sized animals and burrow to search for earthworms and insects. But they can also steal eggs of other animals to get protein. Las Vegas skunks also hunt flying insects or small birds that include honey bees, wasps and grass hoppers. Their claws are modified for this purpose. They are not selective about the choice of food and feed on whatever they get.
