Manlius Wildlife Tip: Mating nuisance wildlife seem to be most active currently. The sound will carry a long way in the calm, and there are no wind currents to spread human scent about. It isn't uncommon for an old pest animal coming to the horns to circle downwind, to check things out, before barging on in. With a young pest animal it doesn't seem to make much difference. During the mating time of year he is downright stupid. Some rattlers like to use scents to short-circuit this downwind-circling tactic. Pure skunk musk is about the best human-scent-overpowering agent I have tried (I discuss the use of scenes in Chapter 1).
