Salt Lake City Wildlife Tip: Do Salt Lake City rats sleep in the day?
An interesting question to say the least. The short answer is no. Let's have a look at their behaviour.

Rats are hoarders
A single Salt Lake City rat is a pest, but you can get rid of it quite easily. Yet rats aren't solitary creatures, they form nests. This is a system with a form of hierarchy with alpha males and females. Unlike, say, a wolf pack with its strict hierarchal structure, where the alpha male and female have absolute authority, however, rats are conflict driven in their living space. The biggest and toughest rat is always the head honcho. If another rat, bigger and stronger, comes along, he may challenge for leadership. Rats are also very prolific, young gets born on a constant basis. This means a constant need for food is created. Some of the rats will go out foraging, while others are sleeping. Come day or night, rain or shine, they are always busy finding food and bringing it back to the nest.

Why don't we see them that often during the day?
Well, rats are considered pests. They get killed often, be it with traps, poison or their natural predators. This makes them cautious. A Salt Lake City rat out and about during the day is a target for a number of birds, cats, dogs or pest control, and they know this. They move around in shelter; through sewers, underground tunnels and even through the roofs of houses.

But why don't we hear them?
Rats are sure to make noise, why don't they? Well, they probably do. But the bustle of humanity around us masks their noises quite well. Cars passing by, trains, airplanes, music, all of these things aid them in masking the noise they make. What's a squeak against that big v8 engine passing by outside?
