Oakland Wildlife Tip: How big is a rat territory? How far do rats travel from their nest or for food?
Rats can easily fit in extremely small holes; however, it isn't due to softness of their bones. They fit in through these holes because they have flexible, cylindrical shaped and long bodies. They make burrows and spend most part of their lives running through tight spaces and tunnels. Rats check that if they can pass through the holes with their whiskers or not. They make this judgement swiftly, by poking their nose in holes.

Size of rat territory
Small Oakland rats easily pass through small holes, but large rats don't. These holes are only less than an inch (0.96 inches) in the diameter. Not every rate can pass through such holes. Overweight and large rats are very big. However, few rats have small sizes, enough to pass through like juvenile rats. The smallest size of hole which small rats can pass through, can be a vital consideration while making rat-proof structures against the wild rats and cages that are made to keep baby rats. Generally, the wire mesh of 1" x 1" is considered very large hole for the young rats, and 1" x 0.5" are considered narrow enough for keeping even smaller rats. It is recommended to make a mesh of 0.5” x 0.5” for the outdoor rat-proofs.

How far do rats travel from their nest or for food
Every night, Oakland rats travel through 100 – 300 feet away from their nests in search of food. The house rats search for the food and gather material in region of around 10 feet away from their nest (some gather their food 50 feet away from their nest). Both mice and rats are nocturnal with the activity that take place around a half hour just after the sunset to around a half hour just before sun rise. How to Kill a Rat: The best way to prevent and to treat the rodent manifestation is the combination of eliminating the access points where the rats can enter in the home and removing the food sources and shelter which attracts the rodents. Also use the traps to get rid of the existing rats in or around the home. You can use the multi-tactic approach in order to manage the rodents and to decrease the chances of future infestation. The most important thing to do is to use preventative measures like blocking access to the home or access to the food or water sources that attract the rats. Rodenticides do include many types of poisons that can be used in order to kill the rodents.
