East Naples Wildlife Tip: How To Kill A Pigeon: Population Growth Prevention: The reason that lethal methods do not work is largely due to the fact that they do not remove the cause of the problem. The pigeons have taken to that area for a reason, usually food, and will just reproduce again and again. Prevention methods include locating and eliminating/managing food sources that attract the pigeons, the use of pigeon birth-control, live trapping for relocation, and locating/controlling nesting areas. If a place does not have enough food or nesting space then the pigeon population will not be able to grow in that area. The use of birth-control in their food will slowly lower the population of pigeons as fewer eggs are fertilized. Pigeons can also be trapped and relocated. Prevention will generally lower the population of pigeons, and the problems that arise from their large numbers, in the long-term better than lethal methods.
