Dallas Wildlife Tip: Do skunks jump?
Skunks are small animals. A normal Dallas skunk usually weights around 0.5 kg to 8 kg depending upon the type of skunk. They are about the size of a cat. Skunks have elongated bodies, short but well-muscled legs and longs front claws. Their bodies are designed for running, so they do not jump unless it become necessary.

Their physical form and jumping:
Young and small skunks can jump over small fences and even on trees while running from predators. But as a skunk grows in size their front claws enlarge and they inhibit their ability to jump. Moreover young skunks weight less so they can jump easily unlike larger skunks that are unable to jump because of their large size.

Do skunks jump?
Skunks are usually not very good jumpers. But they can climb trees using their sharp claws, and can even jump over small fences if required. They can jump for following reasons
l While searching for food or following their prey, they can climb over trees or jump over short fences
l If they are being chased by their predators, they can jump to save their lives.

So, if you see a skunk jumping over structures don't get surprised. But large sized Dallas skunks can't jump because of their increased weight.

Why skunks are not good jumpers?
Their bodies are not modified for jumping. They have ability to dig and climb trees. But they usually do not jump. They can burrow under fences while searching for food but they can't climb over them. A Dallas skunk can be seen sometimes on top of tree, well they can reach there by climbing with their paws but not by jumping.
