The beaver is a rodent belonging primarily to North America. This animal is famous for cutting wood logs and transporting them to the water bodies where it builds dams. As far as the habit of beavers is concerned, these are primarily nocturnal in nature. As compared to the sizes of other rodents of the same family the size of beaver is comparatively bigger. It is a semi aquatic in habitat. Beaver is famous for building dams over the streams and rivers. Normally the average sized beaver weighs about 40 to 50 pounds. However some exceptionally large beavers weight up to about 80 pounds.
Appearance
Beavers are basically of two kinds with respect to their habitats and locations where they are found. One kind is of the North American beaver while the other one is the Eurasian beaver. Beaver is the second largest rodent present on the Earth’s crust. These features contribute to the efficient swimming and carrying the logs and pieces of woods across large distances by swimming through the rivers and streams. With respect to size, beavers are the second largest rodents in the world. Beavers live in the forms of colonies and they build natural dams over the rivers and streams. Ultimately they provide deep water bodies where they can be safe from the enemies. This also helps them in making the food to float on surface.
Social behavior
Beavers live in the riparian zones and also in the stream beds. In the northern Hemisphere these animals are helping the ecosystem by repairing the water systems and keeping them healthy and this practice is continuing since thousands of years. It is due to these beavers that the water systems are healthy and in good state.
Diet of beavers
Beavers are mostly herbivore in diet. They rely on the fruit, vegetation and other simple substances found in forests. In addition to this they also forage on the leaves and young buds of the plants. The most important and potential impact which beavers have on earth is having an impact on the climate change.
Social organization of beavers
The social organization of beavers is consisting of the families in which there is an adult male and an adult female. They live in the form of monogamous pairs and along with their young ones, they live together in a single unit.
