Introduction
This may sound strange but it is the truth. Rats like many other animals do communicate using audible sounds. Like humans, they can communicate and send message. They do exchange meaning just like the humans but the only difference is, they use pheromones. In this article, here is what we shall examine;
• What pheromones are?
• The types of pheromones that usually do exist.
• How rodents communicate through the pheromones.
Therefore, if you are ready to learn how these small animals do communicate, focus on the next information to find out more.
What are pheromone?
A pheromone is a chemical signature that is usually sent by one animal to another which usually brings about or elicits a response in the other animal of the same species. Usually and many cases, the pheromone are specie-specific since only the animals belonging to the same species can understand the message and respond to the message. Therefore this means that if a rodent uses a pheromone, snakes cannot perceive the meaning. Pheromone has the ability to change the reaction of an organism once it has received the message.
The types of pheromone
Based on the message they are used to send, they are usually classified into 4 groups. There are the:
• Modulator.
• The primer.
• The releaser.
• The signaler.
The modulator pheromone is used in changing the body reactions of the animal. The primer pheromone are responsible in eliciting changes in the reproductive system of the animal for example puberty, estrous cycle and so on. Basically for the releaser pheromone, they strike sexual arousal in the animal and response in the opposite sex. When it comes to the signaler pheromone, these are special. As a matter of fact, it is what the babies use to signal the bond between them and their mothers.
How rodents communicate
Like most of the animals out there, rodents have a special substance, a main olfactory epithelium and a specialized organ in their nose called Vomeronasal Organ (VNO). This makes them highly active in perception of the pheromone. When the VNO receives the pheromone, they travel to the olfactory bulb, this then passes to the amygdale and finally to the hypothalamus. From the final part, the hypothalamus, the message is sent to various other body parts. The rodent now acts as the message requires it.
Therefore, rodents like many other animals out there, do communicate through these special chemicals in their system. Without which communication would be highly
