So, you heard that little squeak, saw a small blur along your wall and heard the little guy scratching and gnawing in your cupboard? Probably a Hartford mouse in the house. The humane solution would be to relocate him to his natural habitat.
Seal off all food sources
Probably the easiest way to get rid of a Hartford mouse is to cut off his food supply. If there is no food, they will leave and find another food source, simple, really. Here's what needs to be done:
• Store all foods with a long shelf life in metal or glass containers.
• Make sure fresh produce is never left out. Fruit and vegetables in a fruit bowl or basket, for example, are a bad idea.
• Never leave pet food overnight. Fido's pellets or Pollie's seeds are both likely meals for the furry intruder.
• Clear out leftovers efficiently. If it's not going in the fridge, the outside bin is the best choice by far.
Catch them
Alternatively you can try a few traps around the house, all safe for everyone and everything involved. Below are listed some usable traps that are furry friendly:
• Coin and glass trap. Simple to set up, you prop a glass on a coin standing on its side with some peanut butter at the bottom of the glass. NB not a good idea to leave this overnight as the Hartford mouse might suffocate.
• Spoon and bucket trap. Real easy to get set up as well, simply bait the spoon with some peanut butter, balance it on the edge of a table over a bucket and leave the mouse to do the rest.
Be aware that, with the traps, keeping pets away is very important. Mice smell them and recognise them as natural predators.
